This Post Is Brought to You By the Letters V and I

Last week I thought I was dying.  Apparently once my immune system is down, it's really down: I managed to contract ear and sinus infections alongside influenza and stomach viruses.  A week straight of delirium, body chills and muscle aches, vomiting, and severe migraines left me in dire straights by the time the weekend came.  My poor husband took me to the doctor out of fear that I was infected by some foreign disease.  After inspection, the doctor diagnosed me with the aforementioned infections and viruses and declared I needed an IV--which they provided at the office--and sent me home with strict instructions to rest and keep myself hydrated.  After an ignominious departure from the doctor's office, because I am someone who generally avoids doctor visits for mere viruses, I went home and passed control of the household into Ben's hands.

Needless to say, the house was in ruins by Monday.  If people were allowed into our house, they would have found caution tape around the kitchen and the laundry pile because the awful odors and foreign substances oozing from their confined spaces (TMI? sorry).

Anyway, I learned a couple lessons from this 1 1/2 week-long ordeal.

1. Flu vaccinations work.  (Both kids and husband received theirs this year.  None of them contracted influenza.)

2.  Children will survive even when their mother is too sick to feed, clothe, or entertain them.  Perhaps this is where guardian angels come in.

I am still recovering but am slowly making my way back to the land of the living.  I promise I will be back to reading all your blogs in a short time.

  1. Oh lady. I was never so grateful to have a co-parent than when the flu knocked me out for late Dec/early Jan. Yet another reason I am permanently in awe of single parents.

I'm glad you're recovering and hope to "see" more of you here, soon.

  2. Feel better! I had an awful ear infection when my little one was 2 months old. That, my friend, is a pain I wish on no one.

The house will come to order, the kids will survive. Rest, recuperate. Be well.

  5. The flu is going around my kiddos' preschool faster than the candy at their Valentine's party. We all got vaccinated, though I can't help but worry and wait to see if it's going to be our turn to battle it. Everyone I know who's had it has had a Rough (capital R) time with it. So glad you got some fluids and some rest! Let the mess ooze where it may, and you take care of you, friend!

  8. Hope you are on the mend. So hard to parent when you are down and out. Just take it easy and slowly settle back in.

  9. Oh Amber. How awful. Just PURE AWFUL. I'm glad you are better. Take it easy, and rejoin the real world as slowly as you can.

  10. I don't blame you for not being convinced right off the bat that flu shots work. The first time I got one, I got the flu. For that reason, I didn't get it for a long time until I got pregnant. Haven't skipped it since. Glad to hear you're on the mend.

  11. Wow, you have been having a rough time. I was wondering what was going on with you -- too bad your absence is due to sickness and not something fun. Hope you feel better soon.

  12. Boo! We're sick around here, too. Fortunately, Jack sleeps through a ton of it. Unfortunately, I don't.

    Hoping you feel well soon!

  13. Life is never quite what we think it will be. And you are SO right. Kids really can survive when Mom is sick, as long as someone else who loves them is there to step in.

Now YOU - rest, rest, rest until you're truly better! (And who cares what the house looks like? Yellow tape is very festive.)

    xoxo

  14. I hope you feel better soon. Kids are much more resilient than we like to think. A week with minimal mom isn't going to hurt them at all! (Unless they actually get hurt- not that I WOULD know about THAT...)

  15. Hope you're feeling better! Your pictures on the previous post made me smile. When my girls were young, my house looked much like that too. The puppy used to have a field day - she loved to eat crayons. Thanks for sparking the memories!
