Let's Support Each Other

When I wrote about competitive parenting, Kristen asked that I "come up with a name for [my] new school of non-judgmental parenting so we can all join you and feel validated."  Kristen, I will do more than that.

We all have our bad days. Days when nothing seems to go right. However, all of us are great parents, with our own parenting flair. To bring out this flair in a supportive environment, I decided to do a weekly meme (for lack of better term) in which I share one thing I am proud of doing as a parent. I would like to invite all of you to do the same! I even created a button for it!

I know. I'm so creative. (Don't laugh.)

Anyway. If you care to join me, please do! I will be presenting my first post next Wednesday but you can write yours any day of the week just let me know so I can read and share it with others! (Have I used enough exclamation points?!!!)

Even if you don't participate, I hope by reading my positive parenting posts, you will remember how awesome you already are.

  1. What a great idea. I try to do that by posting about Weston each week - but I know most days I'm more focused on the fact that I'm not a very good mom since I have to leave him all day and go to work. It really weighs me down a lot - and I think it affects my ability to make the most of the time I do have with him.

I'm going to use this challenge (maybe not every week... I may have to work my self-esteem up to every week) and motivate myself to focus on the good - and not focus on the things I can change or control.

  2. I love this idea! (And look at you, with your very own button and everything. You go, girl!) I feel like blogging has given me a lot of support on the days when I feel like I'm doing everything wrong as a mom. But I think it's great that you're looking to highlight those moments that should make us proud. Here's to support and non-judgment!

  3. We're hard enough on ourselves. If only we could be less judgmental of each other - particularly since we don't know the specifics, the context, what it is to walk in that parent's shoes - much less the dynamics involving the individual children.

Now, given a willingness to be less judgmental of each other as parents, might we not be able to dream a day when we were less judgmental of each other - altogether?

  8. This reminds me of something I heard in a human development class. It's part of the Home and Family Life major at BYU (I think you were in that major) and the professor was lecturing students in that major to study what they're most interested. He said a lot of girls go into that major because they are afraid of being bad parents. He said that's not what the major is for; it's about studying the social science of families. He said, you are all going to be wonderful parents so stop worrying and if you're really good a math, go study that. I was not a family life major but I was planning on elementary education because I thought it would make me a better homeschool mom. After that lecture I decided to study English instead because it is my passion and to trust that I'd do fine with my parenting as long as I was warm and affectionate. (This is not a criticism of those who stick with the major though. My husband is in the SFL after all. The social sciences is where many belong.) I just loved the message that we will be good parents and not to worry so much. :)

  9. Beautiful idea. I'm all the way in. I learn more all the time about the pitfalls of judgement. Decisions and problems that look simple and clear-cut are so different when you're faced with them, or when a dear friend is. Those realizations have been powerful lessons for me. I love this focus on encouragement and promise.

  12. This is a great idea. It's not only going to boost my mothering self-esteem, it's also going to remind me to be the mother I want to be, when everyone is melting down and toys are flying through the air, because then I can blog about how I totally defused those simultaneous tantrums. =>
