Good News
I'm pregnant.
Bad News
I have to tell my husband.
Since we have no idea what causes this, I can only imagine how the conversation will go.
Fake Conversation but Accurate Representation of Us Communicating
Scene: Ben is sitting at the computer when I walk into the room.
Me: Babe, I'm pregnant.
Ben: What? How did this happen?
Me: I don't know! You tell me, you're supposed to be the doctor!
Ben: .....
Me: (Raises eyebrows.)
Ben: (Turns back to the computer.)
Me: Anyway. I think I remember my parents talking about birds befriending bees...
Ben: Wait, you bought a bird!
Me: Um, what? Are you even listening to me?
Ben: Yeah, you said you're pregnant and...
Me: Obviously this conversation is going nowhere if you don't get off of the computer and pay attention to me.
Ben: I'm sorry. (Shuts laptop.) What were you saying?
Me: Right. My parents said something about birds befriending bees and that leading to...
Ben: I don't think birds can befriend bees. That's scientifically inaccurate.
Me: Well, how do you think this happened?
Ben: (Sighs.) I don't know but we'd better figure it out real quick.
Me: You're telling me.
I guess the truth will come out eventually, like when I start puking. Maybe I'll just wait until he figures it out himself. That always works.
Now how will I tell the extended family?

:) Congratulations!!!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations!!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations!!!
ReplyDeleteI am happy for you because I remember reading a post where you said you wanted (X) number of kids. There are two sides to every coin. Mine were very far apart - right now they are 15, 12 and 6. I always thought negatively about "resetting the clock" but really it was not up to me. Circumstances and whatever just made it take that long. I've felt for years that I have a family of two boys and then an only child. Now I'm excited. One will be able to drive and by the time he goes to college, the other will be able to step in his shoes. College tuition will be spaced out hopefully giving us some breathing room to live life and perhaps even save a few dollars.
ReplyDeleteI do understand the comment though. We have friends though who consciously had six kids and just the fact that they chose to have those six children raised eyebrows and drew criticism.
Whatever. I am happy for you because you are happy about it. A blessing indeed!
Oh and just for the record, my neighbor has three in 35 months. I don't know anyone who's beat that in all my years of parenting.
ReplyDeleteWoohoo! Congratulations! And good luck with that whole birds/bees thing... ;)
ReplyDeleteYay! Babeeeeeee!!
ReplyDeleteThis is awesome news, Amber!!
ReplyDeleteCathy,
ReplyDeleteThis comment means so much to me. It's funny because I've often reflected on that post and laughed at how easily I deflected the amount of kids I wanted with why I wanted them before I was thirty. It came down to fear. I didn't want to be attacked for desiring a big family so I pushed the focus onto something much less difficult to attack. I'm sure I'll have a future post delineating my exact feelings on why I want a big family, but it will take a whole lot of courage! Something that you have given me just by these words.
I (we) didn't necessarily plan on having the first two so close together, but when it happened we were ecstatic. This one, however, was planned. Having a baby right now is perfect--the due date preceding med school by a few months and the pregnancy and birth covered by fantastic insurance. Of course, I was worried that it wouldn't happen. As much as people laugh at my obvious fertility, I can't plan exactly when I will get pregnant. We were actually on our last try because the next cycle would be too late for our insurance. When I saw the positive line, I was extremely pleased.
That said, if my fertility fluctuated and made it impossible for me to get pregnant for 10 years, I would have the same attitude as you. The age gap would have its positives and negatives but I am sure you were so happy to add that third to your family. Whatever people might have said. Their opinions do not matter, your happiness does.
Lastly, I'm trying to figure out the math of your neighbor's kids. 3 in 35 months total (including pregnancy_? Or, she has a newborn, a one-year old, and a two-year old? See..if you look at mine I will have 3 under three years of age come April. He he. : )
Oh and just for the record, my neighbor has three in 35 months. I don’t know anyone who’s beat that in all my years of parenting.
ReplyDeleteWe had three in 34 months. ;)
Congrats, Amber. You know how I feel about having mine close, and you know I rejoice in your mother heart. Keep up the good work and try to keep down as much food as possible. ;)
Congratulations, Amber! I'm so happy that things are working out the way you want/need them to. I can't wait to hear all about your pregnancy and then see some cutie patootie newborn pics!
ReplyDeleteEek!! Congratulations! That's so great!
ReplyDeleteHey girl, congrats! Oh my goodness. Does that mean next year I'll get to hold another cute baby at the Storymakers conference? ha ha

Hog dog girl!! Congrats!!!!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations! xoxo
ReplyDeleteYay!!!! Congrats. When are you due? Yay!!!!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations, Amber! I also remember reading that you want to have a big family, so this is terrific news! Yay!
ReplyDeleteOkay, okay, I know I'm supposed to keep it clean, but this is ME we're talking about, so Holy &^%$!!!!
ReplyDeleteIt's happy foul mouth, I promise! I am so pleased for you! Your children, being so close together in age, are going to be terrific friends. And staunch allies. Congrats!
ps: I told my hubs (the second time) by taping the test on the mirror with a sign that said, "Hi, Daddy!" He didn't think that was very funny. Sigh.
Congratulations, Amber. I love this post. And I just went back and reread your "Do you know how this happens" post. We had people say that to us, too. I think you handled it much much better. I hope you are feeling well and wish I could give you a great big smile and hug.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations. There was a time when my parents had children that looked like this: 5, 3 and a set of identical twins, newborns to be more precise.
ReplyDeleteI do not know what the span is for my neighbor (they are new to the neighborhood and I only recently struck up a conversation with her wherein she mentioned the 3 in 35 months.) However, I think her oldest is starting Kindergarten and I know she's got one at 9 mos. so my guess is birth of oldest until birth of youngest?
ReplyDeleteAgain - happy pregnancy. I loved being pregnant!
Congrats?! I love it that I'm not the only person who kicks rocks a bit before telling the Hubs about being pregnant. Mine always blinked silently, and then went to the bathroom to "think". Except for the first time, when he told me he'd call me back and then never did. That was awkward. 3 kids later, guess it's worked out. As it will for you I'm guessing:)
ReplyDeleteNow I love THIS kind of good news! Yay for all of you! Great news and I love the post it inspired!
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh Amber!! Congratulations, that is so exciting. :) Hope the talk with Ben goes well!!
ReplyDeleteI'm so happy for you two.
Congratulations Amber! Great news. So happy for you and yours!
ReplyDeleteHuge huge hugs and squealing here. Okay so I'm hugging myself - well not really, but I'm sending hugs and yes I'm squealing. So so happy for you. And ummmm, doesn't he know after this post?
ReplyDeleteYou are hysterical. (And I needed the chuckle.)
ReplyDeleteVirtual hugs, big congrats, and I'm thrilled for you! (I'm a fan of big, close knit families, and you know it.)
